PREDICT THE FUTURE
Future Implications
The practice of on site tyre and conveyor belt disposal is increasingly coming under closer examination and scrutiny by State Governments and their Environmental Protection Agencies. The Queensland Government has brought this matter to the attention of the Minerals Council of Australia and mine licences are being amended to require removal of onsite disposal stocks.
Historically, on site disposal has been permitted due to a lack of alternatives. However, as new options emerge, mining companies should anticipate a gradual phasing out of onsite disposal permissions. One EPA has commenced to require removal of onsite disposal conveyor bels and OTR tyres over four years at a rate of 25% per year.
It's undeniable that mining plays a crucial role in Australia's economy and ongoing prosperity. However, there is an emerging regulatory requirement to evolve towards more sustainable practices in managing waste products generated by mining.
Nullar Stuart and Carroll Engineering are supporting Mine companies and their management to meet their emerging ESG KPI’s, licence and regulatory obligations.
Tyre Stewardship Australia is implementing a scheme whereby OTR tyres must be tracked and accounted for from “cradle to grave”.
The State EPAs of WA, QLD and NSW are amending mining licences to mandate offsite recycling and introducing Carroll Engineering as a solution provider.
“Early leaders in the mining industry are already devoting resources to implement more responsible practices to EOL tyre disposal’’
Diverting waste from makeshift landfills promotes more responsible custodianship of land for future generations as well as potential repurposing for future applications. This activity improves natural environments and species habitats by reducing contamination to landscapes.
An opportunity now exists to set an example and lift the accepted standard for managing EOL tyres by recovering resources that will otherwise be lost from the productive economy and reducing the need for imported products
Recycling initiatives help Australia advance progressive circular economy outcomes
